Aftershokz Trekz Titanium Review

Update:  Giveaway period is closed.

In less than 24 hours I’ll be participating in the United Relay of America and I’m super excited.  I’m running along the Blue route as it goes through the Phoenix Metro area. (There’s still time to join the Relay as it comes through your part of the country; use this link for 30% off registration fees: http://www.unitedrelay.org/?p=30).   As a #SweatPink ambassador running the relay, I was given a pair of the Aftershokz headphones to review and lucky for you, dear reader, another pair to giveaway!

When I first started running, I always listened to music.  My Walkman (yeah, I just dated myself), my Kazoo MP3 player (!) or my iPod mini were always on my waist or armband.  I joked about my “toolbelt” since I would carry my phone, my music player and my camera on a run!  After the kiddos were born, something switched in my head and I couldn’t run with headphones anymore.  Even with everything streamlined into my phone and with one earbud out, I still didn’t feel safe enough.

Enter the Aftershokz Trekz Titanium headphones.

These wireless headphones use bone conduction to transmit the sounds via vibrations from the cheekbones to the inner ear.  The ear canal is open, so you’re able to hear your surroundings.  Honestly, I was a little skeptical at first, but these headphones really surprised me.

When the headphones arrived, I was excited to get them set up for my early morning run!  They package came with a case, Fitbands (the silicon adjusting brackets), charger, ear plugs, and headphones.

The headphones charged up pretty quickly and it was really straight forward to pair to the Bluetooth on my phone.  I wore them around the house as I was washing dishes and I wasn’t surprised by the kiddos trying to sneak up on me.  🙂

I’ve taken them on a couple of runs and so far they’ve been great.  I do feel like there’s some pressure when I wear them, but overall the sound quality is surprisingly great.

In fact, the sound quality is so good that I panicked a couple of times thinking that they were blocking the surrounding sounds.   I realized that I could hear the birds tweeting and the sound of construction trucks across the canal, so I was just being paranoid!  In the pictures, the tops of my ears are a little squished.  I didn’t even realize that they were squished until after I reviewed the pictures.  I played around with the Fitband (adjusting brackets), but I don’t think that they were helping me.  I’m also playing around with the fit, since I usually wear my glasses and a visor when I run.  That’s a lot of gear in a small amount of real estate.

The headphones are really light and easy to use.  When you turn them on, you’ll hear “Welcome to Trekz Titanium” and you can control the music (and your phone) with the multifunction button.  I didn’t realize that the headphones have two microphones, so you can use them to take calls.

You may be wondering what the ear plugs are for…  Well, if you’re in a safe and controlled environment, you can use the ear plugs to block out ambient noise.  This is perfect for travel or other times when you are not worried about your surroundings.

During my run this morning, I was able to play music on one of the lowest setting and still have conversations with my running buddy!  It’s almost like having background music playing in the car while you’re having conversation with a passenger.  I didn’t have any issues holding conversation (well, except when we were sprinting to the finish but that’s another story!) during the run.

Now, you can enter to win a pair of Trekz Titanium headphones.  What do you listen to while you’re running?  What is your favorite song, mix, or podcast?  Make a comment below and track your entry in the Rafflecopter link to be eligible to win. See terms below.

  1. I listen to music almost all the time. The only time I don’t is if I’m running with a friend. Meghan Trainor is currently on my faves list!

  2. I’m like you and after having children I don’t listen to any unless I’m going for a long run by myself. When I do listen to music, I listen to alternative or top 40. Sounds like I need to try out “Aftershokz”

  3. I don’t listen to music while running right now because I can’t stand to have wires swinging around my body. I’m really excited to see wireless headphones and am putting these on my wish list.

  4. I totally need to listen to music so I can run. So I would love to win this. My playlist is pretty aclectic. Ice cube, Adele, Pearl Jam, Jimmy Hendrix, Macklemore, and some that I’m too embarrassed to say😉.

  5. I recently started listening to music after a loooong time of never doing so. I don’t know, I felt like I needed to spice things up 🙂 I pretty much stick with upbeat music in English or Spanish

  6. Currently on my playlist are Gwen Stefani’s Make me Like You, Sia’s Alive, and Demi Lovato’s Confident!!! ROCK ON!!!

  7. I haven’t run in so long, but music is a must. The most important thing to me is a tempo that exactly matches my stride. When I hit that sweet spot, I could run forever because I just feels like dancing. I’m a music geek so I could probably figure out the bpm, but the song that leaps out at the moment is Maroon 5’s “wake up call.” It was a new song to me, so that tells you how long it’s been since I had a good run.

  8. I don’t normally listen to music unless I’m running. So when I do I just turn Pandora on and love to listen to music from the 80’s and 90’s…
